Les noms des chrétiens

Ce fut aussi à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples furent nommés chrétiens. Actes 11. 26

Si c'est comme chrétien (que quelqu'un souffre), qu'il n'en ait pas honte, mais qu'il glorifie Dieu en ce nom. 1 Pierre 4. 16

Dès le début de l'Église, les croyants (ceux qui ont cru en Jésus Christ) ont été désignés par différents noms. La signification particulière de chacun nous aide à comprendre aujourd'hui ce qu'est un chrétien, et quelle est sa mission sur la terre. — Les chrétiens: Ce nom signifie: de Christ. La première caractéristique du chrétien est de reconnaître Jésus Christ comme Seigneur et de croire dans son coeur qu'il est ressuscité (Romains 10. 9). — Les appelés (Jude 1. 1): Avoir entendu l'appel du Seigneur et y avoir répondu est le propre des chrétiens. —Les élus (Tite 1. 1): Les croyants sont ceux que Dieu a choisis selon sa préconnaissance. Quelle dignité cela leur confère! Ils sont donc responsables d'honorer le Seigneur. — Les disciples (Jean 8. 31): Être disciple, c'est écouter et suivre l'enseignement de Jésus, comme ceux qui l'ont suivi quand il était sur la terre. — Les frères (Actes 9. 30): Le Seigneur nous appelle lui-même ses frères (Jean 20. 17), ainsi tous les croyants sont frères et sœurs. C'est la famille de la foi, qui connaît Dieu comme le Père. — Les amis (3 Jean 15): Le Seigneur a aussi appelé les siens ses amis (Luc 12. 4; Jean 15. 15). Tous les croyants savent qu'ils sont aimés par lui et ils sont aussi liés par une affection confiante et fidèle. —Les saints ou sanctifiés (Actes 9. 13): Les croyants sont mis à part pour Christ, ils ne font plus partie du monde, mais appartiennent au Seigneur. — Les fidèles (Éphésiens 1. 1): Ils persévèrent dans la foi, dans la communion chrétienne. Ils restent fermes face à la persécution.

Our unity comes from our union with Christ.

While Nicholas Taylor was boarding a train in Perth, Australia, his leg became wedged in the gap between the platform and a commuter car. When safety officials could not free him, they coordinated the efforts of nearly 50 passengers who lined up and, on the count of three, pushed against the train. Working in unison, they shifted the weight just enough to free Taylor’s leg.

The apostle Paul recognized the power of Christians working together in many of his letters to the early churches. He urged the Roman believers to accept each other the way Christ had accepted them and said, “[May God] give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom. 15:5–6).

Our unity comes from our union with Christ.

Unity with other believers enables us to broadcast God’s greatness and also helps us to endure persecution. Knowing that the Philippians would pay a price for their faith, Paul encouraged them to strive “together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you” (Phil. 1:27–28).

Satan loves to divide and conquer, but his efforts fail when, with God’s help, we “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Eph. 4:3).

Dear God, please let Christians everywhere experience the blessing of unity in You. Remind us of what we have in common: one hope, one faith, and one Lord—Jesus Christ.
