Plus de limite à la vie?

Qui croit au Fils (de Dieu, Jésus Christ) a la vie éternelle; mais qui désobéit au Fils ne verra pas la vie, mais la colère de Dieu demeure sur lui. Jean 3. 36

Extraits d'un article de journal récent: “Une entreprise californienne vient de dévoiler un projet de recherche qui vise à percer les secrets de la santé humaine… La société s'est fixé pour objectif de repousser les limites du vieillissement et même de la mort” grâce à de nouvelles technologies. On pourrait ainsi détecter très tôt toutes les anomalies dans le corps humain afin de les corriger et de prolonger la vie jusqu'à… pourquoi pas?… l'immortalité, sur la terre! Voilà bien le vieux rêve de l'homme qui veut se passer de Dieu… L'auteur de l'article ajoute: “Ça fait à la fois frémir et rêver”.

Nous dirions seulement: frémir. Quand certains hommes finissent par se prendre pour des dieux, Dieu le créateur vient leur rappeler que c'est Lui qui fait vivre et qui fait mourir, et qu'il est réservé aux êtres humains de mourir une fois, après quoi vient le jugement (Hébreux 9. 27).

Pour obtenir la vie éternelle, inutile de compter sur les milliards de dollars dépensés pour la recherche, il suffit d'accepter le don gratuit de Dieu: “le don de grâce de Dieu, c'est la vie éternelle dans le Christ Jésus” (Romains 6. 23). On reçoit ce don en reconnaissant comme Sauveur Jésus Christ, le Fils de Dieu, mort pour expier nos péchés, et ressuscité, prouvant ainsi que la mort est vaincue. Jésus Christ lui-même le déclare: “Celui qui croit en moi a la vie éternelle” (Jean 6. 47). Ce n'est pas seulement une vie sans fin, pour l'au-delà. Mais dès maintenant, le croyant peut dire: “Pour moi, vivre, c'est Christ” (Philippiens 1. 21).

The God Who Paints

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. Psalm 42:2

Beneath all of our longings is a deep desire for God.

Nezahualcoyotl (1402–1472) may have had a difficult name to pronounce, but his name is full of significance. It means “Hungry Coyote,” and this man’s writings show a spiritual hunger. As a poet and ruler in Mexico before the arrival of the Europeans, he wrote, “Truly the gods, which I worship, are idols of stone that do not speak nor feel. . . . Some very powerful, hidden and unknown god is the creator of the entire universe. He is the only one that can console me in my affliction and help me in such anguish as my heart feels; I want him to be my helper and protection.”

We cannot know if Nezahualcoyotl found the Giver of life. But during his reign he built a pyramid to the “God who paints things with beauty,” and he banned human sacrifices in his city.
 

The Living God has revealed Himself through Jesus.

The writers of Psalm 42 cried out, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (v. 2). Every human being desires the true God, just as “the deer pants for streams of water” (v. 1).

Today there are many Hungry Coyotes who know that the idols of fame, money, and relationships can’t fill the void in their souls. The Living God has revealed Himself through Jesus, the only One who gives us meaning and fulfillment. This is good news for those who are hungry for the God who paints things with beauty.

Lord, You are the One my soul needs. Only You can bring meaning and fulfillment to my life. You are the One my heart cries out for. I put my hope in You.
