Au Kenya, lorsqu'on veut aller de Mombasa à Likoni par le ferry, il faut beaucoup de patience. Des marchands ambulants en profitent pour offrir leurs marchandises aux conducteurs des voitures qui font la queue.

Au volant de ma voiture, dans la file d'attente, je vois un garçon d'une dizaine d'années s'approcher et m'interpeller. Il est défiguré: des traces profondes de brûlures marquent sa joue. Je lui demande s'il connaît Jésus Christ. Il me répond en souriant: “Naturellement, il est mon Sauveur!” Je lui donne alors une brochure parlant du bon Berger. Tout heureux, il s'éloigne en courant, son cadeau à la main.

Bientôt il réapparaît et me demande: “As-tu encore des petits livres? Mes amis aimeraient en avoir un”. Bien volontiers je lui en donne quelques-uns. Et je lui demande de distribuer aux chauffeurs qui attendent de l'autre côté, des tracts évangéliques. Je l'encourage avec ces mots: “Maintenant, tu es un petit missionnaire!” Tout content, il part en courant pour accomplir cette mission. Après une heure d'attente, nous approchons du bac, et mon petit ami arrive en courant et me crie: “Eh, toi, j'ai oublié de te dire que je m'appelle Garry. Veux-tu prier pour moi?”

Prions-nous les uns pour les autres? La Bible nous recommande de le faire. Qui peut dire les bienfaits que nous recevons parce que des frères et sœurs dans la foi prient pour nous? Je n'oublierai certainement pas de prier pour Garry, mon petit ami du Kenya.

We sail into the uncertain future surrounded by the faithfulness of God!

Our son, Josh, is a commercial salmon fisherman in Kodiak, Alaska. Some time ago he sent me a photograph he took of a tiny vessel a few hundred yards ahead of his boat moving through a narrow pass. Ominous storm clouds loom on the horizon. But a rainbow, the sign of God’s providence and loving care, stretches from one side of the pass to the other, encircling the little boat.

The photograph reflects our earthly voyage: We sail into an uncertain future, but we are surrounded by the faithfulness of God!

Jesus’ disciples were surrounded by a storm, and He used the experience to teach them about the power and faithfulness of God (Matt. 8:23-27). We seek answers for the uncertainties of life. We watch the future growing closer and wonder what will happen to us there. Puritan poet John Keble captured this in one of his poems in which he watched the future as it drew near. But as he watched he was “waiting to see what God will do.”

Whether young or old we all face uncertain futures. Heaven answers: God's love and goodness encircle us no matter what awaits us. We wait and see what God will do!
