Deux malfaiteurs

Il sortit, portant sa croix, et alla au lieu dit le Crâne, appelé en hébreu Golgotha, où ils le crucifièrent, et avec lui deux autres, un de chaque côté, et Jésus au milieu. Jean 19. 17, 18

Que se passe-t­il à Golgotha? Jésus, lui qui a été déclaré innocent par son juge, est crucifié entre deux malfaiteurs. Ceux-ci sont condamnés à mort à cause de leurs crimes. Ils montrent leurs tristes dispositions en insultant leur compagnon de supplice. Ils représentent toute l'humanité, dans laquelle “il n'y a pas de différence, car tous ont péché et sont privés de la gloire de Dieu” (Romains 3. 23).

Pourtant l'un d'entre eux est touché dans sa conscience et s'adresse à Jésus. Aux portes mêmes de la mort, il prend conscience que sa seule ressource est en celui qui est crucifié à côté de lui. Il dit à Jésus: “Souviens-toi de moi, Seigneur, quand tu viendras dans ton royaume” (Luc 23. 42).

Comment aurions-nous réagi à la requête de quelqu'un qui nous insultait l'instant d'avant? Mais les insultes n'ont pas altéré l'amour de Jésus pour ce malheureux; aussi répond-il à la demande du malfaiteur: “En vérité, je te dis: Aujourd'hui tu seras avec moi dans le paradis” (Luc 23. 43).

Ces deux brigands crucifiés de part et d'autre de Jésus mettent bien en évidence la situation des hommes par rapport au Christ. Les uns, rebelles et blasphémateurs, restent sous le poids de leurs péchés et devront en rendre compte au jour du jugement. Les autres reconnaissent leurs propres fautes et sont sensibles à l'amour de Jésus qui se donne en sacrifice sur la croix pour expier leurs péchés. Ils reçoivent alors son pardon et la certitude d'être avec lui dans le paradis.

Hearts fragrant with the love of Christ display His beauty.

The world-class botanical garden across the street from our church was the setting for an all-church community gathering. As I walked around the gardens greeting people I have known for years, catching up with those I hadn’t seen recently, and enjoying the beautiful surroundings cared for by people who know and love plants, I realized that the evening was rich with symbols of how the church is supposed to function—a little hint of heaven on earth.

A garden is a place where each plant is placed in an environment in which it will thrive. Gardeners prepare the soil, protect the plants from pests, and make sure each one receives the food, water, and sunlight it needs. The result is a beautiful, colorful, and fragrant place for people to enjoy.

Healthy churches draw people to God.

Like a garden, church is meant to be a place where everyone works together for the glory of God and the good of all; a place where everyone flourishes because we are living in a safe environment; a place where people are cared for according to their needs; where each of us does work we love—work that benefits others (1 Cor. 14:26).

Like well-cared-for plants, people growing in a healthy environment have a sweet fragrance that draws people to God by displaying the beauty of His love. The church is not perfect, but it really is a hint of heaven.

How can you promote the health of your church? Ask God to help you serve others as Christ serves us. Serve in a role that matches your skills and interests. Listen well to others and pray for them.
