Le roi Salomon, connu pour sa grande sagesse, a bâti pour Dieu un temple magnifique. Lors de son inauguration, saisi par la grandeur de Dieu, Salomon s'écrie: “Dieu habitera-t-il vraiment sur la terre? Voici les cieux, et les cieux des cieux, ne peuvent te contenir; combien moins cette maison que j'ai bâtie!” (1 Rois 8. 27).

La question de Salomon restera longtemps sans réponse. Mais, mille ans plus tard, dans le village de Bethléem, la vierge Marie met au monde l'enfant Jésus, “Dieu manifesté en chair” (1 Timothée 3. 16). Dans ce petit enfant, Dieu le Fils vient habiter sur la terre. Il nous révèle son amour pour ses créatures, et son désir d'être présent avec elles.

Aujourd'hui Jésus n'est plus sur la terre, il est mort, ressuscité, et remonté au ciel. Mais sur la croix il a donné sa vie, et son sang purifie de tout péché celui qui croit en lui. Ainsi, Dieu peut maintenant habiter, par son Esprit, dans chaque croyant sur la terre, comme dans un temple (1 Corinthiens 6. 19). Et, tous ensemble, les croyants constituent aussi la maison de Dieu, “une habitation de Dieu par l'Esprit” (Éphésiens 2. 22).

Enfin, lorsque le monde actuel aura fait place à de nouveaux cieux et une nouvelle terre, nous lisons: “Voici, l'habitation de Dieu est avec les hommes, et il habitera avec eux” (Apocalypse 21. 3). Dieu habitera éternellement avec tous ceux qui auront été rachetés par le sang de Jésus. “Dieu habitera-t-il vraiment sur la terre?” Oui! La question posée autrefois par Salomon reçoit ainsi une réponse merveilleuse.

July 28, 2014, marked the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I. In the British media many discussions and documentaries recalled the start of that 4-year conflict. Even the TV program Mr. Selfridge, which is based on an actual department store in London, included an episode set in 1914 that showed young male employees lining up to volunteer for the army. As I observed these portrayals of self-sacrifice, I felt a lump in my throat. The soldiers they depicted had been so young, so eager, and so unlikely to return from the horror of the trenches.

Although Jesus didn’t go off to war to defeat an earthly foe, He did go to the cross to defeat the ultimate enemy—sin and death. Jesus came to earth to demonstrate God’s love in action and to die a horrendous death so that we could be forgiven of our sins. And He was even prepared to forgive the men who flogged and crucified Him (Luke 23:34). He conquered death by His resurrection and now we can become part of God’s forever family (John 3:13-16).

Jesus came to earth to demonstrate God’s love in action. 

Anniversaries and memorials remind us of important historical events and heroic deeds. The cross reminds us of the pain of Jesus’ death and the beauty of His sacrifice for our salvation.

Dear Lord, thank You for loving me so much that You left Your home in heaven, came to earth, and willingly went to the cross for me. Thank You for paying the penalty for my sins and forgiving me.
