Grâce et responsabilité

Si nous confessons nos péchés, [Dieu] est fidèle et juste pour nous pardonner nos péchés et nous purifier de toute iniquité. 1 Jean 1. 9

On ne se moque pas de Dieu; car ce qu'un homme sème, cela aussi il le moissonnera. Galates 6. 7

Robert vivait à la campagne dans une ferme. Son père, chrétien convaincu, aimait beaucoup son fils, qui n'était pas croyant. Il souhaitait profondément que Robert se tourne vers le Seigneur. Il avait pris pour habitude d'enfoncer un clou dans la porte de la grange chaque fois que son fils, bien souvent insoumis, lui désobéissait.

– Que fais-tu? lui demanda un jour Robert, intrigué par les coups de marteau.

– Je plante un clou chaque fois que tu me désobéis.

Travaillé dans sa conscience, l'adolescent confessa ses fautes au Seigneur et le reçut comme son Sauveur. Heureux d'avoir ainsi obtenu le pardon de Dieu, il raconta sa conversion à son père qui se mit aussitôt à enlever un à un les clous de la porte de la grange. Mais les trous restaient visibles et dérangeaient Robert en lui rappelant ses fautes passées.

– Comment allons-nous faire pour reboucher tous ces trous? demanda-t-il.

– Ces trous, vois-tu, ce sont les conséquences de tes désobéissances. Si Dieu a pardonné entièrement les fautes du roi David quand il les lui a confessées, quelquefois il en a effacé complètement les conséquences (1 Samuel 30. 19), quelquefois il ne les a pas enlevées (Psaume 51). Pour nous, il en est de même, mais le Seigneur, qui nous a pardonné, est fidèle. Il peut les enlever, ou nous aider à les supporter et s'en servir aussi pour nous faire du bien.

A New Creation

If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. 2 Corinthians 5:17

No one is beyond the reach of God.

Early in my work life I had a coworker who seemed to delight in using God’s name as a profanity. He mercilessly taunted Christians who were new to their faith or who tried to talk with him about Jesus. On the day I left that job to move to another community and a new place of employment, I remember thinking that this man would never become a follower of Jesus.

 Two years later I visited my old workplace. He was still there, but never have I witnessed such a dramatic change in a person! This man, so antagonistic to faith, was now a walking, talking example of what it means to be a “new creation” in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17). And now, more than 30 years later, he’s still telling others how Jesus “met him where he was—sin and all.”

It occurs to me that the early Christians must have seen something similar in Paul, their fiery persecutor—a riveting example of what it means to become a new creation (Acts 9:1-22). What great hope both of these lives are to those who think themselves beyond redemption!

Jesus sought Paul and my former coworker—and me. And He continues today to reach the “unreachable” and model for us just how we can reach people too. 

Lord, I want to learn to reach out to others and share Your love and forgiveness. Teach me and help me to step out in both faith and trust.
