Tout s'arrange bien

Il y a telle voie qui semble droite à un homme, mais des voies de mort en sont la fin. Proverbes 16. 25

Comment un jeune homme rendra-t-il pure sa voie? Ce sera en y prenant garde selon ta Parole. Psaume 119. 9

Dieu ordonne au prophète Jonas d'aller à Ninive, mais cet ordre lui déplaît. Il décide de partir à l'opposé. Au port, il trouve justement un navire en partance pour Tarsis. Tout s'arrange bien, et Jonas désobéit à Dieu!

L'apôtre Paul est en route pour Rome. Le temps rend la navigation périlleuse et Paul avertit les marins, de la part de Dieu, de ne pas se remettre en route. Mais un doux vent du midi se met à souffler. Tout s'arrange bien, et les marins, négligeant l'avertissement, lèvent l'ancre. Une violente tempête se lève peu après, donnant raison à Paul. Ils font naufrage (Actes 27).

On pourrait multiplier les exemples où des circonstances semblent favorables à un projet, mais conduisent en fait sur un chemin que Dieu désapprouve. Combien plus quand on n'a pas la foi! La trahison de Judas en est un exemple solennel: il trouve l'occasion favorable qu'il cherchait, et il livre son Maître (Luc 22. 6; Marc 14. 11).

Dieu peut se servir des circonstances pour conduire les siens. Mais c'est avant tout par sa Parole qu'il nous indique sa volonté. Si les événements risquent de mener dans un chemin contraire à la Parole de Dieu, prenons garde! Dieu ne se contredit jamais. Mais Satan sait tirer parti des diverses situations pour nous entraîner à désobéir. Et nous sommes prompts à interpréter celles-ci dans le sens qui nous arrange. Il persuadera par exemple un jeune chrétien qu'il peut épouser une jeune fille incroyante, alors que Dieu affirme le contraire (2 Corinthiens 6. 14). Tout s'arrange bien? Oui, mais que dit la Parole de Dieu?

Rescuing the Reluctant

The men took hold of his hand, . . . the Lord being merciful to him, and they . . . set him outside the city. Genesis 19:16

God’s mercy can overcome our resistance.

Many years ago during a water safety class, we were taught how to save a drowning person who is resisting rescue. “Approach the person from behind,” the instructor told us. “Place one arm across the person’s chest and flailing arms, and swim toward safety. If you approach from the front, the person may grab you and pull both of you down.” Panic and fear can paralyze the ability to think and act wisely.

When two angels sent by God came to rescue Lot and his family from the impending destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 19:12-13), they encountered resistance. Lot’s sons-in-law thought the warning was a joke (v. 14). When the angels told Lot to hurry and leave, he hesitated (v. 15). At that point, the two angels “took hold of his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters,” and led them safely out of the city because God was merciful toward them (v. 16).

When we reflect on our journey of faith in Christ, we can see God’s faithfulness in overcoming our reluctance and resistance. When we encounter people lashing out in spiritual desperation and fear, may we have God’s wisdom to show His love to them—and to every person who is reluctant to be rescued by Him.

Father, as I look at my own heart, I know I have resisted You and have been reluctant at times to come to You. Thank You for Your mercy. Help me to share with others who You are.
