Obéissance

Je pars faire les courses et demande à Julie de ranger sa chambre. À mon retour, une délicieuse odeur de gâteau remplit la maison. Julie a décidé de me faire une surprise. Mais sa chambre est dans le même état qu'avant… Tout en voulant marquer son affection pour sa mère, Julie n'a pas fait le choix de l'obéissance.

Avant le souper, j'appelle Grégoire pour mettre la table. Un grognement me répond. De mauvaise humeur il s'exécute, met le couvert à grand bruit…

Le lendemain, c'est au tour de Pauline. Elle descend avant le repas, met le couvert, et demande si elle peut encore m'aider. Comme son frère, elle a mis la table… mais quand l'amour et le dévouement règnent dans une famille, quelle différence! Notre nature égoïste et orgueilleuse est bien à l'origine de ces durs combats pour obéir, ou se faire obéir. L'amour seul produit l'obéissance joyeuse.

Lorsque Jésus est venu dans ce monde, il a montré son dévouement pour son Père par une obéissance volontaire. L'amour en était le motif profond, faire la volonté de son Père était sa joie: “C'est mes délices, ô mon Dieu, de faire ce qui est ton bon plaisir” (Psaume 40. 8). Cette obéissance lui a tout coûté: il a été “obéissant jusqu'à la mort, et à la mort de la croix” (Philippiens 2. 8). Il a reçu du Père une approbation sans réserve: “Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai trouvé mon plaisir” (Matthieu 17. 5). Par son obéissance, Jésus a ouvert le chemin du salut à tous. Et “il est devenu, pour tous ceux qui lui obéissent, l'auteur du salut éternel” (Hébreux 5. 9).

Ask The Author

We have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16

When you open your Bible, ask the Author to open your mind and heart.

Over the years I’ve been part of various book groups. Typically, several friends read a book and then we get together to discuss the ideas the author has put forward. Inevitably, one person will raise a question that none of us can answer. And then someone will say, “If only we could ask the author.” A popular new trend in New York City is making that possible. Some authors, for a hefty fee, are making themselves available to meet with book clubs.

How different it is for those of us who gather to study the Bible. Jesus meets with us whenever we get together. No fees. No scheduling conflicts. No travel expenses. Furthermore, we have the Holy Spirit to guide our understanding. One of the last promises Jesus made to His disciples was that God would send the Holy Spirit to teach them (John 14:26).

The Author of the Bible is not limited by time or space. He can meet with us at any time and any place. So whenever we have a question, we can ask with the assurance that He will answer—though perhaps not according to our timetable.

God wants us to have the mind of the Author (1 Cor. 2:16) so that through the teaching of the Spirit we will comprehend the greatness of the gift He has freely given us (v.12).

Lord, thank You that You are meeting with me

right now. I want to be taught by You. I don’t

want just to have more knowledge about You; I

want to know You in the depths of my heart.
