La conscience: une faculté gênante?

L'homme a une conscience: il est plus ou moins honteux quand il fait le mal, satisfait de lui quand il fait le bien. Mais, dira-t-on, le bien et le mal sont des notions tout à fait relatives. Cependant, chacun possède une référence intérieure à laquelle son comportement est continuellement confronté.

La conscience permet de faire la différence entre le bien et le mal. Elle nous avertit quand nous commettons une mauvaise action. Et notre mémoire est toujours prête à faire surgir les faits les plus misérables de notre passé. Cette voix d'une conscience chargée… l'homme essaie parfois de l'étouffer par toutes sortes d'activités ou de pratiques religieuses, mais généralement sans succès. Elle ne le laisse pas tranquille, lui donne une impression de malaise, trouble son regard, perturbe son sommeil… Il comprend qu'il y a une justice qui le dépasse, et qu'il devra un jour rendre compte de sa conduite à son Créateur.

La conscience a, sur le plan moral, le même rôle que la douleur sur le plan physique: elle nous avertit qu'il est urgent de consulter le grand Médecin de l'âme: Dieu. Il nous a laissé sa Parole, la Bible, bien plus sûre que notre conscience. Elle nous révèle la vérité parfaite, divine, immuable, celle qui vient d'en haut, et non pas de l'homme (Jean 17. 17). Pour celui qui la reçoit avec foi, elle est la lumière qui vient éclairer, “mettre à niveau” notre conscience pour voir les choses comme Dieu les voit, pour les juger et les apprécier comme lui. La conscience ainsi éclairée dirige les pensées et les actes en harmonie avec Dieu.

Snake In A Box

The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord. Isaiah 11:9

Leave final justice in the hands of a just God.

At a nature center, I watched my friend’s rosy-cheeked toddler pat the side of a large glass box. Inside the box, a bull snake named Billy slithered slowly, eyeing the little girl. Billy’s body was as thick as my forearm and he sported brown and yellow markings. Although I knew Billy could not escape from his container, seeing a menacing-looking creature so close to a small child made me shudder.

The Bible speaks of a time in the future when fierce animals will fail to threaten each other or human beings. “The wolf . . . shall dwell with the lamb” and “the nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole” (Isa. 11:6,8). All the inhabitants of the world will experience total harmony and peace.

The Lord will establish this safe environment when He restores the world with His wisdom, might, and knowledge. At that time, He will judge the world with righteousness and justice (11:4). And everyone will acknowledge His greatness: “The earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord” (11:9).

We live in a broken world. Unfairness and discord, fear and pain are a very real part of our daily lives. But one day God will change everything, and “the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings” (Mal. 4:2). Then Jesus will rule the world in righteousness.
