Trois attitudes devant l'évangile

 Quand ils entendirent (l'apôtre Paul) parler de la résurrection des morts, les uns s'en moquaient et les autres disaient: Nous t'entendrons une autre fois sur ce sujet…
Pourtant, certains se joignirent à lui et crurent. Actes 17. 32, 34

Lors des obsèques d'une personne bien connue et estimée dans le village, de nombreux voisins et amis sont venus apporter leur sympathie à la famille en deuil. Tous ont écouté le message de la Bible lu à cette occasion. Quel effet a-t-il produit chez chacun?

Comme autrefois à Athènes, certains ont pu s'en moquer; d'autres ont préféré remettre à plus tard leur réflexion. Espérons que beaucoup ont cru à l'évangile.

Seriez-vous un de ceux qui refusent, qui se moquent peut-être de l'évangile et disent qu'il n'y a pas de Dieu? La Bible appelle une telle personne un “insensé” (Psaume 14. 1). Persisteriez-vous à refuser la grâce de Dieu? Alors cette question vous concerne: “Comment échapperons-nous, si nous négligeons un si grand salut?” (Hébreux 2. 3).

Dites-vous avec insouciance: je verrai plus tard? Mais êtes-vous sûr qu'un délai supplémentaire vous sera accordé pour venir à Jésus? Peut-être avez-vous déjà entendu un message évangélique qui vous a ému, mais vous ne vous êtes pas vraiment tourné vers Dieu… N'attendez plus!

Le verset cité aujourd'hui se termine par: “certains… crurent”. Au lieu de se laisser emporter par l'opinion générale, ils ont eu le courage d'aller à contre-courant. Ils se sont reconnus coupables devant Dieu et ont reçu le pardon du seul vrai Sauveur: Jésus Christ. Leurs noms sont “inscrits dans les cieux” (Luc 10. 20).

Shadowed

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear ? Psalm 27:1

Under the protecting shadow of God’s wing, the little shadows of life lose their terror.

Someone was shadowing me. In a darkened hallway, I turned the corner to go up a flight of stairs and was alarmed by what I saw, stopping dead in my tracks. It happened again a few days later. I came around the back of a favorite coffee shop and saw the large shape of a person coming at me. Both incidents ended with a smile, however. I’d been frightened by my own shadow!

The prophet Jeremiah talked about the difference between real and imagined fears. A group of his Jewish countrymen asked him to find out whether the Lord wanted them to stay in Jerusalem or return to Egypt for safety because they feared the king of Babylon (Jer. 42:1-3). Jeremiah told them that if they stayed and trusted God, they didn’t need to be afraid (vv.10-12). But if they returned to Egypt, the king of Babylon would find them (vv.15-16).

In a world of real dangers, God had given Israel reason to trust Him in Jerusalem. He had already rescued them from Egypt. Centuries later, the long-awaited Messiah died for us to deliver us from our own sin and fear of death. May our Almighty God show us today how to live in the security of His shadow, rather than in shadowy fears of our own making.
