Il me connaissait

Jésus lui-même… connaissait ce qui était dans l'homme. Jean 2. 24, 25

Ainsi dit l'Éternel, qui t'a créé… Ne crains pas, car je t'ai racheté; je t'ai appelé par ton nom, tu es à moi… Tu es devenu précieux à mes yeux… et moi, je t'ai aimé. Ésaïe 43. 1, 4

Pierre est devenu chrétien récemment, il a reçu Jésus pour son Sauveur. Plein de zèle, il désire lui plaire. Mais il s'aperçoit bien vite qu'il a gardé ses mauvais penchants. Malgré toute sa bonne volonté, il se met facilement en colère, et se sent parfois très abattu. Ne va-t-il pas décevoir Jésus? Son Sauveur n'attendait-il pas mieux de lui?

Un jour où tout s'est particulièrement mal passé, Pierre en parle à son grand-père. Celui-ci l'invite à lire la fin de l'évangile selon Jean: Judas le traître conduit vers Jésus une foule armée, venue pour le prendre par surprise et le mettre à mort. Le récit se poursuit ainsi: “Alors Jésus, sachant tout ce qui devait lui arriver, s'avança et leur dit: Qui cherchez-vous? Ils lui répondirent: Jésus le Nazaréen. Jésus leur dit: C'est moi” (Jean 18. 4, 5).

Le grand-père de Pierre explique: Jésus savait tout ce qui devait lui arriver. Il connaissait donc la souffrance que toi, Pierre, tu allais lui coûter sur la croix à cause de tes fautes. Quand il s'est avancé en disant: “C'est moi”, pour s'offrir pour toi, il te connaissait parfaitement. Il t'a aimé comme tu es, sa grâce a couvert tous tes péchés.

Mais il veut aussi te faire faire des progrès pour lui plaire maintenant que tu lui appartiens. Avoue-lui sans crainte tes échecs, tes efforts inutiles. Il veut t'aider. Dans tes combats, il n'est jamais ton ennemi, il est de ton côté! Et il a écrit pour toi toute sa Parole inspirée qui est “utile pour enseigner, pour convaincre, pour corriger, pour instruire dans la justice” (2 Timothée 3. 16).

Walking Billboards

We are ambassadors for Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:20

Good news kept silent is no news at all.

Pete Peterson’s first contact with Vietnam was in the Vietnam War. During a bombing raid in 1966, his plane was shot down and he was taken prisoner. Over 30 years later he returned as US Ambassador to Vietnam. One press article called him “a walking billboard for reconciliation.” He realized years ago that God had not saved his life for him to live in anger. Because he believed this, he used the rest of his life and his position to make a difference by pushing for better safety standards for children in Vietnam.

It is a great responsibility and honor to be appointed as a representative of your country to another. As followers of Christ we are “ambassadors for Christ” (2 Cor. 5:20). Just as God sent Christ to reconcile us to Himself (v.18), we now have the ministry of “reconciliation” (v.19). Our message is that all can be redeemed in Christ because God “made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (v.21).

In response to the reconciling love Jesus offers us, we can share that love with others. Let’s take our role seriously. Wherever God places us in this world, He can use us as walking billboards of reconciliation for Jesus Christ.
