Après le choc qui suivit l'annonce de la grave maladie de notre petit-fils, je connus un profond abattement. Au cours d'une discussion, un ami me dit simplement: “Vous ne pouvez pas porter une telle charge, il faut la remettre entièrement aux mains de Dieu”. Cela me sembla tellement évident que je n'y prêtai pas vraiment attention.

La nuit suivante, je me débattais sous le poids de cette épreuve sans me rendre compte que j'essayais d'en porter une partie moi-même. Je pris alors conscience de la valeur de cet encouragement: je n'avais pas tout remis entre les mains de mon Seigneur. Je me laissais conduire par mes raisonnements qui me poussaient soit à l'anxiété, soit à une forme d'espoir. En faisant ainsi, je doutais de l'amour parfait de Jésus et je restais troublé.

Amis chrétiens, êtes-vous oppressés, accablés, abattus sous le poids de vos douleurs et de vos soucis? Alors, allez au Seigneur Jésus pour lui confier toute votre peine, toute votre inquiétude, sans rien garder pour vous. Déposez tout à ses pieds et laissez-le agir, lui seul. Il nous demande de mettre notre confiance en lui, non pas de temps en temps, mais en tout temps et pour tout, même pour ce qui nous trouble et nous agite le plus. Sans Christ, nous ne pouvons rien faire. Il nous demande d'avancer avec lui, un pas après l'autre, chaque jour. Appuyons-nous sur lui, et la paix de Dieu gardera nos cœurs et nos pensées en lui (Philippiens 4. 6).

Confident Access

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

Through prayer, we have instant access to our Father.

Mont Saint-Michel is a tidal island located about a half-mile off the coast of Normandy, France. For centuries it has been the site of an abbey and monastery that has attracted religious pilgrims. Until the construction of a causeway, it was notorious for its dangerous access that resulted in the death of some pilgrims. At low tide it is encompassed by sand banks, and at high tide it is surrounded by water. Accessing the island was a cause for fear.

Access to God for Old Testament Jews was also a cause for fear. When God thundered on Mt. Sinai, the people feared approaching Him (Ex. 19:10-16). And when access to God was granted through the high priest, specific instructions had to be followed (Lev. 16:1-34).

Accidentally touching the ark of the covenant, which represented the holy presence of God, would result in death (see 2 Sam. 6:7-8).

But because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we can now approach God without fear. God’s penalty for sin has been satisfied, and we are invited into God’s presence: “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace” (Heb. 4:16).

Because of Jesus we can come to God through prayer anywhere, anytime.

Then boldly let our faith address

God’s throne of grace and power,

There to obtain delivering grace
