Mets de l'eau dans la pompe!

Dieu met en évidence son amour à lui envers nous en ceci: lorsque nous étions encore pécheurs, Christ est mort pour nous. Romains 5. 8

Un chrétien se plaignait un jour à un autre de ne pas recevoir d'amour fraternel dans l'église qu'il fréquentait. Son interlocuteur lui rétorqua: “Mon ami, mets de l'eau dans ta pompe! Si tu crois qu'elle va s'amorcer toute seule, tu attendras longtemps!”

On comprend bien le sens de cette réponse. Nous attendons souvent beaucoup des autres, sans penser à nos propres devoirs envers eux! Heureusement, Dieu n'a pas agi ainsi envers nous. Il nous a aimés alors que nous, des pécheurs, ses ennemis, nous étions sans force pour nous approcher de lui (Romains 5. 6-10). Jésus, cloué sur une croix et injurié par la foule, a demandé à son Père: “Pardonne-leur, car ils ne savent pas ce qu'ils font” (Luc 23. 34).

Qu'il soit notre modèle! Soyons les premiers à manifester de l'amour autour de nous, même quand c'est difficile, même quand nous nous sentons agressés ou ignorés. C'est cela, “mettre de l'eau dans la pompe”. Elle est indispensable pour faire jaillir du cœur de notre frère ou de notre sœur cette eau abondante qui nous rafraîchira en retour.

Et si même cela ne devait avoir aucun effet, ne nous décourageons pas. Ce devoir d'amour, c'est notre Sauveur qui nous l'a donné, et c'est devant lui que nous en sommes responsables. L'apôtre Paul l'avait bien compris, quand il disait: “Moi, très volontiers, je dépenserai et je me dépenserai moi-même entièrement pour vos âmes, même si, vous aimant beaucoup plus, je devais être moins aimé” (2 Corinthiens 12. 15).

Paranoia In Reverse

Feeding your faith helps starve your fears.

I remember watching television news reports in 1991 as the nonviolent revolution took place in the streets of Moscow. Russians who had grown up in totalitarianism suddenly declared, “We will act as if we are free,” taking to the streets and staring down tanks. The contrast between the faces of the leaders inside and the masses outside showed who was really afraid, and who was really free.

Watching the newsreels from Red Square on Finnish television, I came up with a new definition of faith: paranoia in reverse. A truly paranoid person organizes his or her life around a common perspective of fear. Anything that happens feeds that fear.

Faith works in reverse. A faithful person organizes his or her life around a common perspective of trust, not fear. Despite the apparent chaos of the present moment, God does reign. Regardless of how I may feel, I truly matter to a God of love.

What could happen if we in God’s kingdom truly acted as if the words of the apostle John were literally true: “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). What if we really started living as if the most-repeated prayer in Christendom has actually been answered—that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven?

Far, far above thy thought
