Il vaut la peine de croire

(Jésus leur dit:) Ce ne sont pas les gens en bonne santé qui ont besoin de médecin, mais ceux qui se portent mal; je ne suis pas venu appeler des justes, mais des pécheurs. Marc 2. 17

– Bonjour, Éric, comment vas-tu?

– Ah, tu sais, Paul, tout va bien depuis que j'ai jeté par-dessus bord l'aimable foi de la maison paternelle…

C'est ainsi que ce jeune répondait, non sans ironie, à un ami plus âgé.

– Je vis sans contrainte, je suis entièrement émancipé. Je ne veux rien manquer dans la vie, j'en profite à fond. Je peux enfin être libre…

À cette tirade euphorique, le vieil ami répond:

– Il faut que je te transmette les salutations de ton ami médecin.

– De qui parles-tu?

– D'Ésaïe, le prophète de la Bible. Voilà son diagnostic: “Toute la tête est malade et tout le cœur est défaillant” (Ésaïe 1. 5).

Sur le plan spirituel, tu vas tout droit à l'infarctus. Aux yeux de Dieu, ta nouvelle façon de penser, tes objectifs, ta vie, montrent que, pour lui, tu es malade à la mort. Mais n'oublie jamais, Éric, que Dieu t'aime!

Quelques semaines plus tard, Éric rencontre Paul.

– Paul, j'ai un message pour toi du médecin Ésaïe.

– Je t'écoute…

– Ésaïe a dit: “Le châtiment qui nous donne la paix a été sur lui, et par ses meurtrissures nous sommes guéris” (Ésaïe 53. 5). C'est ce qui m'est arrivé. Je croyais être libre… Puis il y a eu une grande lutte en moi: dans quel chemin engager mes pas, celui de la vie ou celui de la mort?… Le Sauveur des pécheurs, Jésus Christ, est devenu mon Sauveur. Il vaut la peine de croire!

The Jaws Of Death

They departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere. Luke 9:6

Those who’ve been rescued from sin are best able to help in the rescue of others.

Lauren Kornacki is glad she took that summer CPR class, but she probably never thought she would have to use it so soon and on someone she loves. Her father was repairing his car when the jack slipped and the car fell on him. Lauren, a 22-year-old, reportedly heroically lifted the 3,300-pound car enough to pull him from underneath! Then she kept him alive with CPR until the paramedics arrived.

Far greater than Lauren’s rescue of her father from the jaws of death is Jesus’ rescue of us from the clutches of sin by His death and resurrection. When Jesus sent the 12 disciples to carry out His work, He gave them the assignment to preach the good news of God’s desire to rescue people (Luke 9:1-6).  

They would not carry this out in their own strength, but Jesus would lift the heavy burden of people’s sin as they taught about Him. Their preaching and healing in Jesus’ power and authority proved that Jesus had actually brought God’s rule to earth.

Many today are trapped under the weight of sin, but our great God can rescue us from underneath those burdens and then send us into the world to tell others that He can set them free.
