Des chants dans la caverne

En toi, Éternel! j'ai mis ma confiance. Psaume 71. 1

Tu garderas dans une paix parfaite l'esprit qui s'appuie sur toi, car il se confie en toi. Ésaïe 26. 3

“Mon cœur est affermi, ô Dieu! mon cœur est affermi; je chanterai et je psalmodierai” (Psaume 57. 7). Pour celui qui a écrit ce psaume, tout semble aller parfaitement bien, il paraît n'avoir aucun souci, et n'avoir que des raisons de laisser déborder sa joie.

Pourtant David a exprimé ces paroles alors qu'il fuyait le roi Saül qui voulait le tuer. Il avait dû se cacher dans une caverne. Quelques lignes plus haut, nous lisons: “Mon âme est au milieu de lions; je suis couché parmi ceux qui soufflent des flammes” (v. 4). Alors comment David pouvait-il chanter dans une telle situation?

Parce qu'il faisait entièrement confiance à son Dieu pour être protégé, il peut lui dire: “En toi mon âme se réfugie et sous l'ombre de tes ailes je me réfugie” (v. 1). Tapi dans une sombre caverne, David se savait en sécurité dans la main de Dieu, et il pouvait composer et chanter des psaumes de louange.

Sommes-nous, nous aussi, actuellement dans une “caverne”? Peut-être terrorisés sous les bombes, ou traqués par la persécution? Peut-être anxieux à la suite d'un examen médical, ou inquiets en pensant à la perte possible de notre emploi ou à l'avenir de nos enfants? Ou encore tristes parce que nous avons perdu un être aimé?

Quelle que soit notre “caverne”, Jésus veut y demeurer avec nous, nous rassurer, nous apporter ses divines consolations, et même nous remplir de joie malgré la souffrance. “Même quand je marcherais par la vallée de l'ombre de la mort, je ne craindrai aucun mal; car tu es avec moi” (Psaume 23. 4).

Make It Attractive

Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Colossians 4:5

The beauty of a changed life can attract others to the One who makes us beautiful.

The story is told of a young boy who, during a bygone era, was aboard a passenger train attempting to make money selling apples. He made his way through the train car, saying, “Apples! Would you like to buy an apple?” When he got to the rear of the car, he still had a bagful of apples and no money.

A gentleman who noticed his plight took him aside and asked to see one of the apples. He proceeded to go to the front of the train, polish it conspicuously with a napkin, and then walk down the aisle eating the apple and commenting on how delicious and refreshing it was. Then he told the boy to try again. This time, he sold every apple. The difference? The apples had been made attractive to the potential customers.

This story can remind us of one way we can interest others in the gospel of Jesus Christ: Make it attractive to them—show them the difference it has made in our own lives. That is best done by following the words of Paul in Colossians 4:5. “Be wise,” he said, “in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity” (niv). If we show kindness, love, and compassion to others, those who observe us will wonder why, and that may give us an opening to tell them about the beauty of God’s love for them.

our salvation. Help us to make the gospel
attractive to others by the way we shine
Jesus’ light on those we encounter each day.
